Combination of Cues and Priors in Depth Perception

چکیده
Various visual cues provide information about depth and shape in a scene. In this paper , research on depth cue combination is reviewed. Using normative considerations, we have developed the \Modiied Weak Fusion" (MWF) model of cue combination. This model includes a simple, linear cue combination rule (weighted averaging of depth estimates). But, it also raises three key issues for depth cue combination in human vision that lead to apparent nonlinearities and interactions between cues: (1) cue promotion (most cues must be scaled and disambiguated before averaging is a meaningful operation), (2) dynamic weighting of cues (a cue's weight depends on scene content, including the weight of other cues), and (3) robustness of cue combination (a cue's weight may change with the degree of discrepancy of the estimate of depth derived using that cue relative to the estimates from other cues present in the scene). We have perceptual evidence for all of these processes including the linear depth combination rule, cue reweighting with changes in cue reliability, cue reweighting with changes in depth discrepancy between cues, and cue interactions contributing to cue scaling (that is, to an estimate of the viewing distance used to scale velocities or disparities to depth values). Finally, we summarize more recent work concerned with the way in which diierent cues' a priori biases interact to disambiguate simple 3-D stimuli.

Mixture models and the probabilistic structure of depth cues
Monocular cues to depth derive their informativeness from a combination of perspective projection and prior constraints on the way scenes in the world are structured. For many cues, the appropriate priors are best described as mixture models, each of which characterizes a different category of objects, surfaces, or scenes. This paper provides a Bayesian analysis of the resulting model selection...
متن کاملOrdinal configural cues combine with metric disparity in depth perception.
Prior research on the combination of depth cues generally assumes that different cues must be in the same units for meaningful combination to occur. We investigated whether the geometrically ordinal cues of familiarity and convexity influence depth perception when unambiguous metric information is provided by binocular disparity. We used bipartite, random dot stereograms with a central luminanc...
متن کاملDepth cue combination in spontaneous eye movements.
Where we look when we scan visual scenes is an old question that continues to inspire both fundamental and applied research. Recently, it has been reported that depth is an important variable in driving eye movements: the directions of spontaneous saccades tend to follow depth gradients, or, equivalently, surface tilts (L. Jansen, S. Onat, & P. König, 2009; M. Wexler & N. Ouarti, 2008). This ha...

In depth cue-conflict conditions, various depth cues could represent different extents of depth. Previous studies have investigated the perceived size of negative afterimage in depth cue-correlated conditions in which different cues introduce almost the same amounts of depth to the visual system. This study examined the perceived size of the afterimage in the human observers in a condition that...
